Waking up at 4:50am every morning can be really tiring. I myself find it hard to wake up at times. While others are still sleeping, swimmers are already up training our hearts out. So the question is how do we keep ourselves motivated to wake up for training every single day?
The answer is simple.
Here are 5 quotes from my 2 greatest idols Michael Phelps and Michael Jordan. I live by that fires me to wake up every morning. If the snooze button gets the better of you, I hope you will have that extra drive to beat the snooze button after reading this.
1) You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get. – Michael Phelps
In order to have the motivation to wake up, you have to set goals for yourself first. You cannot be blindly training every day without a goal in mind, you will lose motivation in no time. For me I set long term goals that I want to achieve, with short term goals to act as baby steps to my long term goal. I constantly remind myself of that goal, which motivates me to train hard every single morning. An example of a long term goal would be to qualify for the Olympics, and short term goals would involve making the SEA Games and Asian Games team.
2) If you want to be the best, you have to do things other people aren’t willing to do. – Michael Phelps
No success is possible without sacrifice. You have to learn to say no though it may be hard at times. Friends may be having late nights out but you cannot go because you have to be up early the next morning. If you join them for a late night, you just would not be able to wake up for training the next morning. Therefore you just cannot have the best of both worlds if you want to be successful in swimming.
So learn to say no to late nights, you may seem like a selfish person at first but trust me when you achieve your goals, everything will be well worth it! I am glad that my training mates are as determined as me thus I never had problems with ditching friends to sleep early as they are early sleepers as well.
3) I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. – Michael Jordan
You have to realize that everyone starts from a nobody, including Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps. Nobody starts off their sporting career as a successful athlete. I’ve had my setbacks too. But always remember that as long as you keep training hard, you are already a step ahead of those that aren’t.
Every successful athlete has definitely fallen in their career before, but it is about getting back on your feet coming back stronger for the next race. Imagine if Michael Jordan had given up after those failures, he would not have been the sporting legend he is today.
4) I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying. – Michael Jordan
If you fail, try and try again, because failure is part and parcel of life. So what if you had a few setbacks in your life? Setbacks only make you a stronger person.
Let me ask you , 10 years from now, would you rather live life saying
1) What if I had done this?
2) I’m glad I did this!
I’m pretty sure it would be the second option. So why be afraid to try? The biggest risk in life, ironically, is to not take one.
Which is why after I’m done with this semester of school, I’m going to take a semester off to focus for SEA Games 2015 because deep down I know that my future self would thank me for making this decision. I’ve been really stressed out balancing school and studies at the same time therefore taking this break would definitely allow me to focus more on my swimming. I want to live life with no regrets and therefore I have made this decision.
I may not be able to graduate with my batch of course mates, but all of it will be worth it. I’ll be sure to let you guys know on how it feels like to be off school for awhile!
5) If you accept the expectations of others, especially negative ones, then you never will change the outcome. – Michael Jordan
Inspired by what coach Gary said yesterday, people are definitely going to talk shit about you no matter what, so just let them talk. As long as deep down you know that what you’re doing would lead you to your goals, don’t ever stop doing it.
There are loads of people that talk behind my back as well, but does it change the way I live life? The answer is no. As long as deep down I’m doing what I feel is right, nothing can change the way I live my life.
