Starting the New Year Right

I went to the Church of Singapore with my mum and sister to start a New Year. 2013 was the best year I had so far, and I want to thank God for everything.

During the service the flashbacks of 2013 came back to me and I almost teared a little. A year has flown by and I was being blessed with so many fruitful memories, can’t believe so many great things can happen in just a year. I don’t usually go to church as Sunday is technically my only rest day from swimming, so I usually spend my Sundays lazing in bed for half the day.

Experience from the service

It was definitely an uplifting experience for me and I felt a sense of freedom and happiness from within. In church, nobody judges you by how you look or the way you act as everyone was a child of God.

Everyone in the service had huge smiles on their faces and they looked genuinely happy. The freedom I experienced from within was something that is hard to describe, but I guess they felt the same way as I did.

To be honest, after the service, I felt more awake than sleeping for more than 12 hours. And I felt more productive as the church service ended at 11am, thus I had more than half a day left to spend time with family and friends instead of the usual waking up at 1pm.

After the service I felt really refreshed though I slept late the previous night, I’m not sure why, but I just felt really free after the service. I guess sleep is not the only cure to fatigue and tiredness.

Why I chose to go to church

I always skipped church services last time as due to all of my swimming training, I would be really really tired when it comes to Sundays, but my mum managed to persuade me this time.

Mum: Son, do you feel that 2013 has been a really great year for you? Having a great army experience, getting into NTU, winning your first Gold medal at the SEA Games, having really close friends that you can count on, and basically all your goals for 2013 were accomplished?

Me: Yeah definitely was! Everything fell right into place; honestly it feels like a miracle.

Mum: Well even Dad says it is a miracle. But trust me, it’s not.

Me: How so?

Mum: Ever since the start of the year, I had been faithful in prayer. I prayed everyday for you to achieve your goals, for sister’s success, and most importantly, to a happy family, and look where we are now? God answered all of my prayers.

Me: Woah, yeah it’s really amazing, though I haven’t been attending church, I’ve been praying a lot too. We should really thank God.

Mum: Yeah, so since God has been there for us for the whole of last year, I think it’s only fair that you join me in church service, start the New Year well, you already know what God is capable of.

Me: Yupp, I know, ok we’ll go to church. 🙂

The message I’m trying to bring across here is not that God will give you everything you ask for, but rather, if you put your faith and trust in Him, He will guide you through the tough times.

When you’re stressed or feeling troubled with life, just remember that God is always watching over you, and everything you do is part of God’s plan. Though I’m a free thinker, I believe that God has the answer to everything.

My life has definitely changed. Thank you God for everything.

Deep in his slumber, one night a man had a very real, yet surreal dream. He dreamt that he was walking along the beach with God. As he looked up at the sky, he saw all the scenes of his life flash by along with two sets of footprints: one set for himself, and another for God.

After all the scenes had flashed before him, he looked back at those footprints and noticed something quite disturbing: At the most difficult times in his life, he saw only one set of footprints.

This deeply troubled the man, so he turned and said to God: “You said that if I followed you, then you would always walk with me through thick and thin. In looking back, I see that during the most painful times there is only one set of footprints. Why did you leave me when I needed you the most?”

“I love you and would never leave. It was during those times when you suffered the most that I carried you.”
